My Mt. Apo Day Hike Adventure

Hey everyone! I have to tell you about this incredible hike I did up Mt. Apo in the Philippines. It was seriously challenging, full of surprises, but the experience was absolutely worth it!

Just imagine – 9,692 feet of pure adrenaline and breathtaking views. Definitely not for the faint of heart, but a total must-do for anyone who loves an adventure!

Bucket List Adventure, Without Breaking the Bank

So, Mt. Apo has been on my travel list forever. I mean, who wouldn't want to climb the highest mountain in the Philippines?

But every time I looked into it, I'd find these super expensive camping trips, and my wallet would cringe. It just seemed out of reach.

Then, I stumbled upon a really affordable day hike deal on Facebook. I couldn't pass it up!

Two Mountains, One Weekend?

Okay, this might sound a little crazy, but hear me out. I'd done a few back-to-back day hikes before, so I figured I could handle it.

Plus, I already had a hike planned for the next day on Mt. Matutum. It was a great way to save on travel costs and tick off two mountains in one go!

The timing just felt right.

The Adventure Begins...Eventually!

I was all set, permit in hand, backpack packed with snacks, and I showed up super early at Digos New Bus Terminal. Like, *way* too early.

I grabbed some lunch, charged my phone, and, of course, got even more snacks.

But guess what? 2 p.m. rolled around, and no one was there! It turned out everyone was running late, even people who lived closer than me.

I was getting a little impatient, but I reminded myself to focus on what I *could* control, and waiting for stragglers wasn't it!

Finally Kicking Off the Hike

After a long wait, we finally got moving. We headed to Brgy. Kapatagan, and let me tell you, it was a long tricycle ride.

We ended up waiting even longer for other hikers. As night fell and the rain started, we decided to just head to the jump-off point without them.

We were adventurers, not fragile flowers!

The rain actually felt like a good sign – a promise of a beautiful sunrise. And honestly, it's Mt. Apo – unpredictable weather is just part of the experience.

We made it to Colan and got a good night's rest. Some hikers were exhausted, but I was buzzing with excitement, too pumped to sleep!

The latecomers finally showed up, and we were all set for the climb, rain or shine!

A Nighttime Climb

Okay, picture this – 1 a.m., and it's go time! We said a quick prayer for safety and started hiking under the stars.

The weather was cooperating, and we hiked with our headlamps, winding through neighborhoods, rice fields, and steep hills.

I kept telling myself, "You got this! You trained for weeks and packed all the right gear."

And then, out of nowhere, we hit a wall – literally! It was a 90-degree rock climb, but with some determination, we tackled it in about 15-20 minutes. Phew!

Luckily, the rain from the night before hadn't made things too slippery, just a few tricky spots here and there.

Busy Trails and Boulders

Mt. Apo is a popular spot – it felt like a highway with so many other hiking groups!

Around 5 a.m., we reached a place called The Boulders – get ready for some amazing views.

Massive rocks everywhere, and the scenery was breathtaking. It's one of those spots that makes the whole hike worthwhile, and we knew we had to catch the sunrise there.

Sunrise and the Summit

As the sun rose, painting the sky with incredible colors, we were completely mesmerized. All the chaos and waiting were instantly forgotten.

We snapped tons of pictures, soaking it all in. And then, it was time to head for the peak!

The final climb was steep, but we managed it without the full sun beating down on us.

Three Peaks and Windy Conditions

Did you know Mt. Apo actually has three peaks? I decided to conquer the Digos Peak – I mean, do you really need to see the same view from three different spots? Probably not.

The others were up for the challenge, though. It was also way colder than I expected, so I was glad I brought my windbreaker!

Hiking Isn't Always Easy

Unfortunately, our friends who were running late couldn't make it to the peak. They were exhausted from their first big hike.

It's true, Mt. Apo isn't for beginners! I even saw someone dealing with leg cramps.

One hiker swore it was his first and last time… but you know how it is with hiking. It's addictive, and you might just change your mind later.

Solo Reflections on the Way Down

By 9 a.m., we were heading down. The sun was out, and I used my windbreaker for some shade.

As I walked back through The Boulders, I realized hiking down the same path can get a little boring. So, I slowed down, took my time, and enjoyed some quiet reflection.

There's something really peaceful about walking alone in nature. It can feel a little eerie at first, but then it's just you and the trees, and it's so calming.

I almost got lost near the campsite and even saw some… interesting human remains on the trail! A little creepy, I know!

It made me think everyone should take a basic mountaineering course. There's always more to learn about survival and rescue, right?

An Unforgettable Adventure!

So, there you have it! My crazy, sometimes chaotic, but incredible day hike adventure.

It was tough, there were delays, but seeing that sunrise and feeling accomplished was magical.

If you're up for a challenge and an unforgettable experience, Mt. Apo should definitely be on your list. Just remember to be prepared, and don't say I didn't warn you about the adventure!
